Buyer's guide to dining chairs

4 things to consider before you buy a dining chair

1 Hardwood frames are very durable, especially with traditional tenon and mortise joints. Check under seats of metal frames to see if they are securely fixed.

2 Look at the distance from table to chair. You'll need to allow 18-20cm for a comfortable fit.

3 Avoid widths of less than 40-50cm as there won't be enough support and aim for a seat depth of 45-50cm. When choosing, allow 60cm of space for each diner on a rectangular table or 75cm on a circular table.

4 Check fabric has the 25,000 'rub test' label. Chenille or velvet are likely to show wear. Choose a material such as leather or go for washable covers.
