Top row (Left-Right):

Hammer
You'll need one for hanging frames on pin hooks. Choose a hammer you're happy with – always weigh up a selection of sizes before you buy, as you'll need to be able to control it carefully on small nail heads.

Panel pin hooks
Use these for hanging light clip frames. Inch-long nails are best as they support the weight.

Toly H picture hangers
Simply put the hangers against the wall and hammer the small pins through the plastic. The nails are evenly spread so they don't damage your wall.

Mirror plates
These go on the back of picture or canvas frames – the square end fixes to the side of the frame and the round bit sticks out and screws into the wall. Useful for hanging heavy canvases where a secure fastening is required, or for hallways where pictures may get knocked.

Spirit level
Essential if you want to hang two or more pictures in a row or line up screws or nails at the same level. Use it to check frames are hung level, too. Choose a small (30cm) model that's light and easy to handle.

Middle row (Left -Right):

Tape measure
This is essential for positioning your frame at the best viewing height. The middle of the frame should be 150cm from the floor.

D-rings
Use small screws to fix two of these to your frame, about a third of the way down. Thread
cord through the loops, tie firmly and hang.

Bottom row (Left -Right):

Cord
This comes in a range of strengths from 7-27kg. Polyester doesn't stretch or rot like cotton, and nylon and stainless-steel wire won't corrode.

Hangers for picture rails
Hook these over a picture rail, then attach cord to the picture and hang it from the hook.
