With a wide range of bathroom counter tops available, there's something to suit every taste and budget. Fit a smooth counter top above a vanity unit with cupboards for a stylish and practical option, or go for a wall-hung 'floating' worktop to add real wow factor.
What are the choices?
Stone
If you're after a luxurious look that's long lasting, opt for a limestone, slate or sandstone surface. Most surfaces come pre-sealed, and matt natural stone is easier to keep clean than a highly polished finish. Make sure your floor joists can take the extra load before you buy. Prices range from £300 to £1,500 per sq m.
Composite
This is a mix of resin, pigment and stone or quartz and is available in lots of colours. It's extremely hard wearing and can be custom-made to any size or shape after a template is made on site. Prices range from £200 to £600 per linear m.
Wood
Wood has natural warmth and is softer to the touch than stone. It needs to be primed two or three times after initial installation, and then only once or twice a year. Opt for naturally oily wood such as iroko if you're intending to use it around the basin. Prices range from £100 to £500 per sq m.
Others
Glass is expensive but looks fabulous in the bathroom, while laminate is a budget-friendly choice. For safety, opt for glass at least 19mm thick. Porcelain absorbs little water, is less prone to scratching than stone, and comes in many colours.
