How to get the best from loose covers

Love the idea of a light-coloured sofa, but worried it won't stand up to the rigours of family life? Investing in a sofa with loose covers is the perfect solution

Pick washable covers
Machine washable or dry-cleanable loose covers are a great choice for a light-coloured sofa, and suit a relaxed scheme. Refitting them can be tricky, but if yours is from IKEA, you can download lost instructions at IKEAfans.

Buy an extra set
When buying a sofa, ask if you can order an extra set of covers – you may also be able to buy them off the peg later. IKEA offers a range of covers for its Ektorp sofa, while Bemz will make up covers to fit IKEA pieces in a range of designs.

Tip…
Looking for new covers for an old Multiyork sofa? The company keeps a record of all its shapes for upholstered sofas and armchairs, so you can order a new set at any time. If your sofa is from another company, visit eBay to search for unwanted sets of covers.
