Simple Recycling
Be eco friendly with our top tips to make recycling at home as easy as possible.
Almost two thirds of our household waste can now be recycled and thankfully more of us are now doing so. However, Recycle Now campaign have discovered that nine out of ten people in England and Wales would recycle more if it was made easier. By logging onto www.recyclenow.com you can find numerous tips and advice on recycling and how to make it easier (along with some scary facts about just how much we chuck away- on average every person in the UK throws away their own body weight in rubbish every 7 weeks!) Here are a few top tips:
Know what can be recycled –as well as glass, cans and paper a whole heap of other household items can also be recycled- phone directories, junk mail, furniture, tins of paint, clothes and shoes are just a few.
Remember to use your local recycling service, either via kerbside collection or by taking items to your local recycling centre. If you log onto www.reyclenow.com you can use the postcode locator 'where can I recycle' facility to find out about recycling services in your area.
Don't forget to shop before you drop. Many supermarkets have recycling facilities so you can recycle items such as glass bottles, cans, card and plastic at you own convenience, as part of your regular trip to the shops.
Every year we get through over 12 billion carrier bags in the UK. Thankfully many supermarket chains are doing their bit to encourage us to recycle. Tesco's supply a re-usable 'bag for life', which costs a mere 10p. They will also replace it free of charge as soon as it wears out. Or if you get your groceries delivered to your door, your driver will take back any unwanted Tesco, plastic carrier bags with him. Log onto www.tesco.com for more information.
Sainsbury's are currently working with Comic Relief so you can recycle and donate! By picking up an envelope in store you can recycle your old mobile phones and printer ink cartridges. For every mobile phone Cellular Surplus is able to reuse, £3 will be donated to Comic Relief and similarly 50p for every inkjet cartridge. Click onto www.sainsburys.com or www.rednoseday.com for more information.
Recycle from your DIY! Planning some renovation? Did you know you can now recycle your old plasterboard. A number of Household Waste Recycling Centers are now running trials to work out the best way to collect plasterboard waste. Log onto www.recyclenow.com to see if the scheme is being piloted near you.
