Expert advice for buying a washing machine

Whether you're washing the kid's sports kit or doing your delicates we've got the model for you

Things to consider before you buy

Size
A smaller capacity machine (5-6kg drum) uses less water, but if you have a big family you may find it more economical and practical to choose a larger machine (7-8kg drum). One way to ensure a larger machine is more efficient is to choose one with intelligent sensors that adjust the amount of water used depending on the size of the load.

Noise
If you're planning on having the washing machine in an open-plan kitchen-diner, the amount of noise the machine generates will matter. A quiet model has a normal wash level of under 60 decibels and a spin level of under 70 decibels. However, you'll have to find out this information directly from the manufacturers.

Construction
The sturdier the parts the longer the machine will last, so look for a moulded metal drum and ribs rather than a metal drum with plastic ribs that can deteriorate. A stainless-steel drum and element are also best, as they won't rust and are less prone to limescale damage.

Ratings
Washing machines range from an outstanding A++ to a dismal G for energy efficiency, wash performance and spin-drying performance, so consider the impact on your electricity bills.
