Ideal Home's carpet shopping checklist

Get the right carpet in just one shopping trip. Use our handy checklist as a reminder of the questions to ask, and remind yourself what all the jargon means

Carpet is a big investment and you're likely to keep the same style for a while, so it's worth taking your time and making the right choice. We asked the experts at the Carpet Foundation for their top tips

Before you start shopping think about:

Suitability
How much wear and tear will your carpet receive? A hallway will need a harder wearing carpet than your bedroom. How long do you expect your carpet to last?

Style
Do you want plain or patterned carpet? Coloured or neutral? What will fit in with your existing scheme?

Budget
Have an idea of the amount you want to spend. Don't forget the cost of fitting and other materials. You should expect to pay £20m2 for a good quality carpet.

And most importantly of all - find the right retailer. The Carpet Foundation has a list of recommended shops.

Make sure you get the right carpet to suit you and download your carpet shopping checklist
