Think about where your tables will be located. If they are by a sofa make sure they're not higher than the arms.
You may want to avoid wood if you're planning on having a table in direct sunlight. The top table may fade while the others keep their colour. Create even wear by taking out the lower tables regularly.
Consider a tough material, such as plastic, if you have children. Minor scratches and marks on wood can be erased with retouching crayons from John Lewis. Use glass cleaner or soapy water on glass or acrylic but avoid using anything abrasive.
Jointed furniture is stronger than self-assembly. Flat-pack furniture uses glue, bolts and dowels but these aren't as strong and fixings loosen as furniture is moved.
Glass and glass topped tables should be made of toughened glass for safety. It's stronger than standard glass and won't break into sharp shards if broken.
