Bin liners
Generally, the cheaper the bin liner, the thinner it will be and the easier it will split, so invest in thicker, draw-string bags to avoid nasty leaks.

Rubber gloves
Choose ones with long, fold-back cuffs to stop sleeves getting soggy.

Floor cleaner
Essential for vinyl, tiled and wood floors. Choose one that you dilute with water, but be sure to follow the instructions carefully to avoid leaving a slippery residue.

Window cleaner
Sparkling windows make a home feel brighter and cleaner. Choose a non-drip spray with vinegar to make panes gleam.

Multi-surface cleaner
Opt for a spray cleaner designed for all your surfaces – tiles, wood, plastic and stainless steel.

Feather duster
You can't beat a feather duster for hard-to-reach dust on the top of units and clearing the cobwebs from corners.

All-purpose stain remover
Get a product such as Oxi-clean from Lakeland, which is good for laundry and will clean dirty tea-cups, restore grouting and bring the gleam back to very dirty pans.

E-cloth
This eco-friendly multi-fibre cloth cleans just using water and keeps stainless steel pristine. You can get them at Lakeland.

Scrubber
A sponge with abrasive backing is great for wiping down food preparation areas, as well as dealing with burnt-on food on pans.

Bar Keepers Friend
Cleans stainless steel, chrome, copper and brass, and removes stains from china, sinks and taps. Available from Lakeland.

Dustpan and brush
Choose a design that allows you to store the pan and brush clipped together.

Bleach
Leave cloths in a weak bleach solution in the sink overnight – by morning, both cloths and sink will be disinfected.

Oven cleaner
Use a product you leave on before wiping off, like Oven Mate from Lakeland. It does all the hard work for you.

Sink un-blocker
Dissolve food blockages and rinse them away without the need for a plunger.
