Design your own baubles
Get the whole family to customise plain baubles to hang on the tree. Decorate with glitter pens, or enjoy messy PVA glue and glitter. To avoid breakages, use plastic rather than glass baubles.
Throw a kids-only Christmas party
Before the grown-up festivities begin, treat your kids to a special party. Invite their friends for games and a sleepover, or go ice skating (find a rink at www.iceskating.org.uk) before serving a mini traditional dinner.
Go carolling and raise money
It might not go down well with cynical teenagers, but for younger kids singing carols is fun. It's also a chance to raise money for good causes – and you no longer need a licence if you're just going door to door.
Take a walk in the country
Wrap everyone up warm in gloves, hats and scarves and set out on a mini adventure. Scarthin Books sells guidebooks at £5.95 each, which give details of family walks around the UK.
