Light switch

How to change a light switch

You don't need an electrician to change your light switch – here's how to do it yourself in a few simple steps

Step 1 Ensure the switch is isolated from the mains power supply.

Step 2 Undo the screws that hold the cover plate onto the switch box. If the switch has been painted round a lot you may need to score with a knife before removing the plate.

Step 3 Unscrew the small screws in the terminals, remove the wires and reconnect them to the new plate using exactly the same terminals. Note: If you are replacing a two-way switch with more wires, change one at a time to avoid confusion.

Step 4 Check the wires are firmly secured and any excess cable is tucked inside the box so it doesn't get trapped by the cover plate.

Step 5 Screw the new cover plate on, reconnect the supply, then check the light works
